The mission of the Department of Social Work is to prepare students for practice that is sensitive to the social, economic, cultural, demographic and political contexts that shape our state and beyond. Within a framework emphasizing professional ethics, social justice, diversity, strengths and community engagement, the Department seeks to equip students for leadership roles and effective practice. The Social Work programme moulds students with the knowledge, skill and attitude for professional commitment. The programme uses an inter-disciplinary approach in analyzing important social issues and concerns, with an emphasis on equity and justice. Field instruction lies at the heart of Social Work education. The structured programme of the department provides the student a planned systematic experience under the guidance of a faculty member. The student is provided opportunities for mastery of skills and avenues for appreciating the realities of coping with complex situations, to understand and intervene in an extraordinary range of human and social problems and in the context of specific service-delivery systems. A key aspect of this learning process complements academic work through integration of theory and practice.
